"Animation Now" --From the Digital Production Studio--

Session 1 invited two of the most prominent people working with digital technologies in Japanese animation production today: Tanaka Seiichi, computer graphics director at Omnibus Japan Corp. and supervisor for the currently-under-production film, G.R.M., and Osaka-born Hayashi Hiroyuki, digitals director for G.R.M. and wxecutive director of Umigame Productions Ltd. The moderator was Hamano Masaki, chairman of the Animation Kobe Organizing Committee. Their discussion, which gave the audience a glimpse of the actual work involved in digital production, was punctuated by dynamic visuals, including clips from「Ghost In The Shell 攻殻機動隊」and「機動警察パトレイバー2」, two works in which Mr. Tanaka was involved, and 「土器王紀」, the opening sequence of the film「ガングリフォン」, and an American Family TV commercial, both directed by Mr. Hayashi. The discussion also included production details of the film G.R.M., from which visual clips were introduced as well.

Born 1958 in Osaka. Executive director of Umigame Productions Ltd. Supervised computer graphics for numerous projects, including "Gundam the Movie 逆襲のシャア", American Family Insurance television commercials, and the computer games "ガングリフォン" and "土器王紀". Currently working as digitals director for director Oshii Mamoru's feature film "G.R.M."

[Computer graphics director at Omnibus Japan Corp., Supervisor for G.R.M.] Born 1960 in Tokyo. Joined JCGL, a computer graphics production company, in 1982 following stints at an animation studio and work as a cameraman. Took part in production of the feature animation movie Lensman and produced computer graphics for exposition visuals, CF, titles and other works. Joined Omnibus Japan in 1988, where he produces computer graphics for CF, corporate identity visuals, NHK special programs and other projects. Supervised computer graphics and digital effects as CG director for such works as "機動警察パトレイバー2" (1993), "Ghost in the Shell "(1995), the omnibus part of "Abunai Deka Returns "(1996), the pilot version of "G.R.M." (D2) (1996), and the
omnibus part of "Neon Genesis Evangelion The Movie Air/For You, My Pure Heart " (1997). Currently member of three-person team supervising the digital engine for G.R.M. (provisional title), a new feature film directed by Oshii Mamoru that is scheduled for completion in 2000.
