With the music he wrote for "Neon Genesis Evangelion", Shiro Sagisu has expanded the horizons of animation music. His music gives precise and far-ranging expression to the visual image it accompanies, while being an independent artistic work in its own right. In most Japanese animation feature films, the soundtrack and theme song are separate entities, with the theme song having little to do with the actual work, but the music for "Neon Genesis Evangelion" gives added depth to the experience of the film, and the tremendous popularity of both the soundtrack and the theme song contributed in turn to the film's success. Further, the 新日本フィルハーモニ−'s performance of the Evangelion Symphony brought animation fans and classical music lovers together, a milestone that was also hailed by the festival judges.

"As mentioned earlier, Evangelion is a work that is imbued very strongly
with the personality of its director, Iorino Hideaki. Our work as composers
usually involves meeting with a director and working on the basis of this
director-musician relationship, but Iorino-san has such a deep knowledge
of music that he's practically a musician himself. Our conversations about
music were much more intense than is usual with other directors, so taking
that into account I should say this award belongs to Iorino-san as much as
to me. However, Evangelion is special in that it started as a television
series and then was made into a movie, and the whole thing turned into a
larger phenomenon after the TV series ended. In that sense, the music transcended the scope of an ordinary soundtrack, and this is something I hope to do again in future. Thank you very much."
