"Thank you so much, audience members! I was completely unprepared for this,and am still trying to get over my surprise. The reason is that Evangelion
is a work that expresses the mental and emotional journey of the director
personally. I imagine most of you came here today expecting to see fun,
enjoyable animation works. Members of my staff who were here during the
screening session told me there were people who had to leave because their
children were crying, and I can understand that. Evangelion is a very persona
l work, which was made after its director, Iorino Hideaki, had been unable
to create a single film in five years. Like the film's main character, he
finally felt he "couldn't run away," and put everything he had into the making
of this work. That it has won the Audience Award indicates many of you could
identify with it in diverse ways. I have no idea what sort of work Iorino
and the Gainax group will create in the future, but I hope they will have
a similar impact on you. Thank you again."
