"Thank you. Having won this important award, I'm going to share something
with you that I don't usually tell people. Although Princess Mononoke has
today been seen by large numbers of people and won great acclaim, it was
extremely unpopular during its planning stages for two reasons. The first
was that, even with Miyazaki Hayao at the helm, a period piece did not sound
like a good idea. The second was the production cost involved, a monstrous
two billion yen. It was believed that this cost would never be recovered,
even if the film were released. Today, the opposition of many people to
the making of this film for those two reasons is just a memory, but rememberin
g it makes receiving this award all the sweeter. Also, I'd like to add someth
ing I forgot to mention earlier when receiving Miyazaki Hayao's Award for Best Direction. It's been reported that Princess Mononoke will be Miyazaki's
final work, but this is not altogether correct, so I'd like to make the follow
ing comment. Miyazaki will continue to work on writing scripts and drawing storyboards.
When he said he would retire as a director of animation movies, he was referring to the process of checking the pictures. Princess Mononoke had a little over 140,000 original drawings, of which Miyazaki himself worked on about 80,000. He is today 56 years old, almost 57 actually, and he no longer wants to do this painstaking work. However, he will go on writing new scripts
and working on storyboards, so he looks forward to your continued support
in that regard."
