Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki

The animation feature film "The Princess Mononoke", which was released last summer, has become the biggest hit movie in Japanese cinema history, breaking records for both attendance and box office receipts. Its director, Hayao Miyazaki, is known for many animation masterpieces, such as Nausica of the Valley of the Wind and My Neighbor Totoro. In making "The Princess Mononoke", Miy azaki has fulfilled an idea he started contemplating 17 years ago, and the film's universal messag e -- "Live!"-- has deeply moved its audiences, young and old alike. Hayao Miyazaki heads Studio Ghibri, where he nurtures talented animators and also gives full play to his own skills as an animator -- skills developed over many years, that are reflected in the film's beautiful presentation. As a director, Miyazaki makes use of cutting-edge computer graphics and other technologies to create the visuals giving life to a wonderful film with a serious theme.

"I'm sorry that director Miyazaki Hayao was unable to attend this ceremony in person. He had a previous engagement in Kyushu today, so I have come here to accept this award on his behalf. I have the following message from the director: this movie belongs to everybody who has seen it. This is actually one of his favorite expressions, something he says often on various occasions. All of us, in fact, who were involved in making this movie are delighted that so many people have seen our film. Thank you so much."
